Selfie is latest fad among people. People like to click photographs of themselves. Some people are so obsessed with selfies that they click it everywhere. Special mobiles phones are Being made only for selfies. Such is the craze. However like everything, even selfies has many disadvantages. It has gone to the extent of killing people. The American Psychiatric Association has officially confirmed that selfies are a mental disorder.
The APA made this classification during its annual board of directors meeting in Chicago. The disorder is called selfitis, and is defined as the obsessive compulsive desire to take photos of one’s self and post them on social media as a way to make up for the lack of self-esteem and to fill a gap in intimacy.[InPostAds ad=”4″]
According to APA, there are three levels of the disorder:
Borderline selfitis: Taking photos of one’s self at least three times a day but not posting them on social media.
Acute selfitis: Taking photos of one’s self at least three times a day and posting each of the photos on social media
Chronic selfitis: Uncontrollable urge to take photos of one’s self round the clock and posting the photos on social media more than six times a day
According to the APA, while there is currently no cure for the disorder, temporary treatment is available through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
The United States Department of Transportation estimated that during 2014, the so-called “year of the selfie”, 33,000 people were injured while driving and using a cell-phone in some fashion, which can include talking, listening, and “manual button/control actuation” including taking, uploading, downloading, editing, or opening of selfies. A 2015 survey by Erie Insurance Group found that 4% of all drivers admitted to taking selfies while driving.
In India also, there have been many selfie deaths. A 15-year-old, identified as Edwin, was instantly killed by a speeding train while posing for a selfie on the track in Thiruvanantapuram. It is youngsters who are dying due to selfies.
Parents of youngsters should teach their children importance of life. When so many people are dying due to selfies, youngsters should know that selfie should not be clicked. In several places, a new board saying ‘No Selfies’ has come up.
Union Minister for Road and Highway Nitin Gadkari has already started campaign, wherein he has asked people not to take selfies. A video of this ad is being features in cinema halls as well on TV to create awareness.
Selfie has now been called as a mental disorder. It is high time, people get away from this disorder.
