Kasargod: Anti-Kannada activists scrawled slogans against Kannada in a college here. The incident once again brought to light the tension over language prevailing on the Karnataka-Kerala border. When the students, teachers and other staff arrived at college on Wednesday morning, they found anti-Kannada graffiti on the walls and doors of the college, especially near the Kannada department.
‘Banish Kannada from here, this is Malayalam region’, ‘November 1 is Kerala Paravi, not Kannada Rajyotsava’, ‘Kerala always number 1, always ahead’, ‘Malayalam is our mother tongue’, ‘We are Mallus, Malayalam is God’s own language’ were some of the graffiti writings in Malayalam found on the walls.
Offended by the act, Kannada student organization ‘Sneha Ranga’ staged a flash protest outside the principal’s office. Vidyanagar police on receiving information rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The Kannada speakers who form the linguistic minority in border areas like Kasargod have for long been facing injustice and undue pressure, as they neither belong to Karnataka nor are they assimilated into Kerala.
